A verbal journey through a “simplified sequence” of development, function, relational and innate healing capabilities.

*Recommended reading for comprehensive context: FSM article, Lymphatic article and Fascia article find these articles on our blog

We are amazing instrument’s of consciousness, Authentic Intelligence, and we are Genius!

In our mother’s womb, we bathe in and are nourished by amniotic fluid.
This primordial fluid, which transitions into cerebral spinal fluid- CSF, is a molecule away from sea water, a conveyer of energy and information, Scalar Energy.

Some say, the “IAM” presence, life force, chi, bio energy, Kundalini.
This highly nourishing fluid aids in the growth of the fetus.
Approximately 4 weeks gestation, the neural tube closure takes place, and a differentiation occurs, the amniotic fluid becomes Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) within the growing fetus.
The brain and spinal cord are organized around this fluid, which informs the developing brain of what to do and is capable of tissue growth and ultimately the “Global hydraulic system” arises through the cranium, spine and sacrum.
This system encompasses the prenatal essence and the respiration of life force.
The brain cavity, the ventricles, house the CSF and travels along the neural tube to Lumbar-vertebrae 2.
The nervous system continues into the sacral bone 2-3.
The central nervous system, CNS, is bathed by the CSF and produces approximately 500 ml per day, draining through blood, the vascular system and the Glymphatic system( lymphatic’s of the brain), a continuous flow through the nervous system.
All parts of the brain have their functions and bodily relationships , biomechanically, biochemically, bioenergetically, mental-emotional and spiritually.
The cranium, brain tissue, CSF, CNF and connective tissue layers along the neural tube of the spine, and sacrum, are in partnership with brain body patterns created for our survival.

When we are born, the cranial sutures are soft and pliable to allow the journey through the birth canal.
These sutures do not fuse as we grow, but rather have mobility and inherent motility. The sacrum has these same qualities.
The connective tissue layer of the dura and duralumin tube protect the brain and the nervous system. The central nervous system is bathed within and without by the CSF, informing all molecular process’.
Osteopathic medicine, science and research, has given rise to the teachings of Cranial sacral therapy and Brain therapy technique, a specialized form of manual therapy working with the brain tissue, addressing the nervous system, bones, membranes, grey and white matter, neonatal reflexes and eyes.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage treatment is also in relationship to this system functioning, as the glymphatic system (lymphatics of the brain) has recently been acknowledged, although always existed.
These structures are intimately connected in the functioning of this global hydraulic system. Trained and intuitive practitioners are able to apply with precision these applications and support the wisdom of the body’s innate healing abilities.

There are three main parts of the brain, four lobes, two hemispheres, (the homunculus), grey and white matter, neurons and glia cells, all with distinct roles and regulation of bodily functions.
Within each cell is mitochondria, the “powerhouse” of the cell that produce adenosine triphosphate – ATP, the main currency of the cell.
The Glymphatic system is the lymphatic system of the brain, having the same functions as whole body lymphatics, of transport and clearing.
The CSF communicates throughout the brain without synapses, a conveyer of Scalar Energy conductivity, a field of encoded substances using total synchronization!Needless to say the environment of the brain is extremely complex, sensitive and intuitive, with much more to explore. We develop through our genetic blueprint, becoming our constitution and grow into our life’s experiences and purpose.

Distorted cell structures, through genetic abnormalities and disorders, accidents, injuries, stroke, etc., along with, bio mechanical stress, biochemical stress, bioenergetic stress , and distressed mental/emotional patterns (somatic aspect), are housed in our constitution and brain-organ relationships. Neuro plasticity and intentional applications of said therapies can assist in recovery, clearing pathways, transforming trauma reactions,and promoting optimal environment for overall function. Healing and alignment are enhanced with Energy medicine devices, such as Frequency Specific Microcurrent, Photobiomodulation, near infrared wavelengths, along with additional bodywork techniques.

The brain and the spinal cord are part of the central nervous system, CNS.
The spine houses the spinal nerves, the peripheral nervous system, PNS, which has two component systems, sensory and motor( somatic and visceral).
There are segments of the spinal cord along with correlating spinal nerves and their functions:

Cranium- Brain spinal cord
The cervical segment
The thoracic segment
The lumbar segment- where the spinal cord comes to an end as well as the CSF
The sacral segment
The coccyx- the tailbone

Although the spinal cord technically ends, the nerve innervation continues, and is in constant communication within this hydraulic system and, with all planes of existence. From our vital physical aspect, mental/emotional aspects , spiritual and cosmic aspects, we are connected and in communication. Genius!

For those who are new to this information, one can begin to see the importance of therapeutic applications to these systems. The human body has incredible ability to protect us and does this in a variety of ways.
When we have an overuse or traumatic experience of any kind, our body goes into action to protect, heal and recover through various biological principles and a sequence of healing. When each cycle has not healed completely or is interrupted, pathologies occur and the tipping point of re injury is smaller, it takes less stress to be reactive. This happens on a cellular level, The Cell Danger Response.

When we understand these principles, we can identify and assist the body’s wisdom to heal through natural therapeutic applications and compliance of the individual. The practitioner’s hands emit scalar energy (all of our hands have this ability). Our hands sense and communicate with the bodily systems and their energetic/scalar rhythms of information, allowing reorganization and ultimately homeostasis. These highly perceptual techniques, applied with skill and precision with correlation to other areas of the body, can support a broad spectrum of conditions, such as:

Anxiety, stress, depression and general mental health
Accidents, injuries, surgeries- pre and post operative
Chronic conditions and pathologies for which there seems to be no resolve
Brain and neurological health projects
Trauma
Improving genetic constitutions
Increased awareness, intuition and consciousness
A whole body “reset”
Moving through life we become accustomed to a level of disharmony. Receiving this integrative and therapeutic approach brings us back to center, allowing our whole being to heal, and reminds us of who we are.
Authentic Intelligence
Genius!

Note from Sarah

I would like to state that I consider healing a sacred act of service, with permission. When one is informed, and or in need, and chooses to participate in their own process, healing is exponential. It is an honor to facilitate this communication between our humanity, spirit and the one. We all have spirit given gifts to be brought out into the world and add to the qualitative state of our lives and eternity. Many times we discover these aspects through challenging circumstances, when recognized, have potential to be a catalyst for our gifts to be expressed with brilliance. Be inspired to say yes!
I also want to give credit where credit is due, to Dr Joe Dispenza for the “Genius” commentary. Having attended his workshops and teachings, we definitely activated the systems discussed in the article, and he is an authentic expression of truth and love.

Many Blessings
Sarah is also a Teachers assistant for the Chikly Health institute, Sharing wisdom from decades of training and practices. Thank you to All the teachers who have influenced my ability to provide Healing therapies.

Fascia: Understanding the Living Matrix of the Body

Fascia is the connector of all the body’s functional systems integrating the whole, implicated in communication, proprioception and regulation of tension, Bio Tensegrity. This responsive network of connective tissue is an expressive organ, involving bio mechanical , biomagnetism, neural and sensory functions which envelopes, separates and integrates. Emerging research suggests that fascia supports piezoelectric conduction and vibratory coherence through the alignment of electromagnetism, structured water and collagen. Fascia works parallel with the lymphatic system, nervous system and circulatory system. As a sensory organ (somatically) fascia is a living record of experiences. When we look at the development of repetitive connective fibrils from the extracellular matrix and ground substance, we understand that, the undifferentiated cells develop into potential parts, superficial, visceral, deep and parietal, where there is no beginning nor end, but rather a continuum of tissue development, a geometric fractal patterning of the continuous whole, Holism.

The components of fascia include:
*A variety of cells, some newly discovered, confirming a body wide signaling system.
* Fiber proteins, such as Collagen ( the most abundant protein), Elastin and Reticulin.
* Ground Substance(the fluid part of fascia) such as Glucosaminglycans, Hyaloronan, and Growth factors (signaling molecules).
* Structured water

The Fascia has essential roles in:
* Structural integrity
* support and protection
* mechanical tension, compression and movement
* cellular substrate transmission, vibrational, electronic, photonic and cellular
* Hydration and Viscoelasticity
* relational , sensorial qualities- memory

Let’s look at development embryologically for a moment. Our genetic code consists of codons, a sequence of 3 nucleotides in DNA, RNA , that correspond to specific amino acids. A codon instructs the cell to start the creation of a protein chain. One cell becomes two through polarization.This division takes place through a formation of a tube (a repetitive Core process) organizing into structure. In early embryological development of a fetus there are 3 germ layers, the primary layer of cells:
*The Ectoderm, which gives rise to the brain , nervous system and superficial epidermis.
* The Endodermis, which gives rise to the digestive systems and glands.
*The Mesodermal, which gives rise to the muscle, bone, blood, urogenital tissue system and Connective Tissue in general.
Developing from undifferentiated cells into differentiated cells, for example, early muscles cells arise from within the connective tissue into mature muscle development, stimulated by the tension within the connective tissue, which permeates throughout developing organs and structures, rather than wrapping around or attaching to, there is a continuing sheath. This sheath has different concentrations of connective tissue. Continued fascia development in utero determines patterns, environmental, mental, emotional, along with the trauma of birth. We continue to develop through our intrinsic core nature, through movement and sensorially interpreting, the gravity of our life’s experiences. The fascia remembers. In trauma-informed bodywork and psychotherapeutic touch modalities, fascia is not experienced as inert tissue but as a responsive, adaptive medium.
Benefits of receiving Specialized Therapeutic Fascia applications are:
* Structural alignment
* Joint mobility
* Pain reduction
* Scar reduction
* Unwinding restrictions, adhesions and congestion
* Fascial hydration
* Somatic restoration- mental emotional and memory harmonizing

* Integration of the whole being
* Affecting Everything…..

The living matrix, fascia, is a physical fabric permeating all the great systems of the body, our architecture and our story. Fascia is more than the sum of its parts, it is a living record of our experiences. Gravity is a force that binds everything together, and we participate in it with movement. Fundamentally we “move” through life! Our Fractal Fascial expansional balance, is omnidirectional, capable of transmitting and receiving signals in all directions. Through skilled touch and applications, the presence of energy resonance and safety, along with guidance through breath awareness, the Fascia can reorganize, rehydrate and reanimate coherently. Integrating the objective and subjective qualities of the living Matrix, affects the whole being, Body- Mind-Memory.

Experience optimal alignment and transformation through Specialized Fascia bodywork!

Whatever your physical health project, Somatic plateau ,or overall wellness goal, it took a moment to become dis harmonized and takes a “moment” to re harmonize. The importance of consistency and commitment within a time frame, is essential for longer lasting results and transformative effects. Additional self care suggestions will be provided to enhance your process.

To inspire you choosing to initiate your health and wellness path…..

We have put together 3 introductory series session packages that work for “most”, to get started.

A cost effective option to provide efficiency within the appropriate time required.

* A series of 3 sessions within 4 weeks-

* A series of 6 sessions within 2 Months-

* A series of 9 sessions within 3 Months-

Upon initial session consultation, the most suited series will be suggested.

This series will be prepaid and completed within the time frame allotted for optimal results.

Waves of information within the waters

By Sarah Rotella LMT

Understanding the Lymphatic System: The Body’s Healing Flow

The lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s natural balance, guiding the flow of water, energy, and information that supports healing and homeostasis. All body fluids, the liquid contents of the body, are dynamic and supported by regulatory processes called Homeostatic mechanisms. Energy and information have been scientifically proven to be stored in water molecules. Water is the most abundant compound in the human body. The waters are contained inside the cell (intra cellular) and outside the cell (extracellular), the crystalline waters of the Matrix. The matrix determines the health and environment of cellular life, with reciprocity to the outer environment. Lymphatic structures develop from the matrix. The connective tissue forms from the matrix. The Fascia network of connective tissue envelopes everything in the whole body, creating a piezoelectric field of vibrational resonance, the living fascia. All are in relationship with each other.

Within all the bodily systems, organs and structures, exists the lymphatic system. The lymph vessels, lymph nodes and lymphatic fluid are present in approximately 98% of the human body. Lymphatic fluid is usually clear, or slightly yellow, and contains 96% water, as well as colloids, minerals, protein, lipids and a variety of additional substances. There are also the unorganized, unstructured pathways of the interstitial tissues and pre
Lymphatic pathways, that support the drainage of all substances that make up the “lymphatic load”.

The lymphatic system is responsible for:
* Tissue fluid homeostasis
* Immune cell transport
* protein, fat and lipid transport
* transports hormones and enzymes
* re captures products of tissue metabolism

There are superficial and deep circulation of the lymphatic pathways. These pathways are supported by the actions of the autonomic nervous system, such as breathing and peristalsis of the visceral smooth muscle contractions. Movement and exercise are most beneficial for the deep lymphatic circulation, while Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (MLDT) is particularly helpful for the more superficial pathways.
With this being said, there are a few areas of interest in our complicated environment today. The microbiota and the visceral health projects are one of the concerns, as well as the brain and nervous system communication on a whole. There are also accidents, injuries, surgeries, scarring and trauma. Toxic overload, stress, nutritional deficiencies and modern day lifestyles have resulted in accelerated pathological conditions where our “whole self” needs support. MLDT is powerful for maintaining homeostasis amidst the body’s dynamic expression.

Applying MLDT does this by:
* rerouting stagnate fluid
* mapping and re routing surgical sites
* balances the parasympathetic system
* restores vagal tone
* drains the glymphatic sytem (lymph in the brain), as well as the dura and pia matter
* supports neurological function
* supports immune function
* decreases inflammation
* aids detoxification
* reduces pain and muscle spasm
* increases mobility
* aids in viscera motility as well as organ drainage such as liver, intestines, reproductive, etc.
* opens the door to self healing and self regulation
* improves whole body functioning

The innate wisdom of our body, our being, is intelligent and knows how to heal. We are made of water, light, oxygen and all the elements of the earth and universe. We are energy before we are matter. Within the matter we are primarily water.Water holds primordial knowledge, energy and memory of our dynamic experiences, sharing information demonstrated by our abilities to form, replicate, self regulate, heal and thrive through conscious awareness. The power of water to purify, rejuvenate and inform, is the power of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system provides the pathways for this communication and exchange of substances within the body. Manual lymphatic drainage therapy is a powerful application in our modern day world,to maintain Homeostasis, as “All are in relationship”.

My journey with Frequency Specific Microcurrent began after a life-changing event that opened the door to profound healing, clarity, and spiritual growth. Are unforeseen events a misfortune, or an opportunity? The winter of March 2010, I experienced a vehicle accident, which triggered PTSD symptoms from a severe vehicle accident I had in 1994. The original accident that had occurred resulted in, short term memory loss, cognitive and speech disruptions, and ultimately a major life transition. I did indeed have a traumatic brain injury, although at that time it was not recognized as such. During the 2010 accident, I struck the exact same side of my head, my left parietal, that I did in the 1994 accident. I experienced crying non stop for two weeks and simply could not remedy the situation on my own. I called my functional medicine physician at the time, and she informed me she had a treatment that would help. I went the next day to experience laying on a table with a radio looking device next to me. The doctor placed wet towels at my neck and around my feet. I had been laying on the table for 45 minutes without any hands on manipulation. The doctor came in periodically to adjust, what I know now as, the frequencies. Mid way through treatment, my prefrontal cortex lit up, I experienced clarity and a down regulation of symptoms. I am highly sensitive, intuitive and curious. My clarity continued and as I drove away from the treatment, I said to myself, “I have to learn this!” I immediately looked up the training information and I had credentials to begin! I signed up for my first immersion training that May, with Frequency Specific Microcurrent and Dr Carol McMakin. Within a year an a half, I completed my certification process and purchased my first device, then acquired another, and finally the famous Blue Box, which assisted me in my own healing, as well as assisting others.

This two year unfolding was not as quick as I have described. I had completed my advanced lymphatic certification and was already involved with brain therapy curriculum with Dr Bruno Chikly, of the Chikly Health institute. I am inspired by overlapping studies as it gives understanding to what I already know intuitively within my own multidimensional being. It also offers me the means to professionally apply the techniques to assist others. The healing I experienced in FSM training however, did complete, incomplete healing from the severe accident in 1994. The fascia connections that healed within the trauma state of adhesion was released. Emotions were liberated and my whole being was allowed to find its harmony. Healing continued for there were a series of life events prior to the original experience, as often are, that leads us to the present moment. My understanding deepened and evolved, which takes a moment, in and of itself to integrate. There is a state of excitement as well as reflection and mourning. All un affirmed mental and emotional process’s, which are at the heart of trauma, revealed themselves. It was not the first time for me, but rather a maturity of evolution. We know what we know, until we know differently. Additional information, which often comes most profoundly through experience, gives light to the intellectual affinities, intuitive knowings, and inspired seeking. Be curious always…..

In life we are offered opportunities, to Glean wisdom and offer our gifts in action! “ We are energy before we are matter” ,as I titled a previous article, and contribute to the quantum informational field. It is in my humble observation that the evolutionary process is a continuum and we are meant to follow our inspirations, and when we do not, we may experience the unforeseen to inform us. Look to the purpose and messaging. Will we listen? I hope so! If not, we will always be offered another loving nudge of opportunity to hear a new, and trust ourselves! I also know, in part, my purpose personally, professionally, and spiritually, is to share a bit of truth , insight, inspiration and open doors to say yes! Particularly for those who seek, listen and are resonant, to gain self empowerment. I look forward to doing so in person. So be it, so it is…….

To understand how important moisture is for the skin, first you have to know what dehydrated skin is. When the top layer of skin doesn’t have enough water, the skin appears dry, rough, and flaky.

It’s not just a matter of aesthetics. Dry skin can be vulnerable. Dehydrated skin is unable to maintain an appropriate amount of skin barrier, leaving the skin more susceptible to damage from external and environmental factors. When the skin barrier is not intact, it can let bacteria in, which can lead to infection.

Skin hydration is important because hydrated skin looks more plump, healthier, and vibrant. Skin aging is associated with loss of skin moisture, and hyaluronic acid is the key ingredient when it comes to combating or reversing these signs. Hyaluronic Acid has water-pulling qualities, this can refine and age-rewind in those dry, sunken, or ‘crepe’ areas.

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) was developed in Copenhagen in the 1930s by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid and brought to the US in 1980s by Dr. Robert Lerner.

Manual Lymph Drainage uses light, rhythmic touch to encourage healthy lymph flow within the body to improve the function of the immune system. Unlike your circulatory system (blood) which is pumped by the heart, the lymphatic system does not have a pump of its own and only flows in one direction.

Lymph fluid is extra fluid that drains from cells and tissues that is not reabsorbed into your system, as well as other substances such as proteins, minerals, fats, nutrients, damaged or cancer cells, and foreign invaders (bacteria, viruses, etc.) that is filtered through your lymph nodes and then returned into the bloodstream. The effects of Manual Lymph Drainage include pain relief, deep relaxation, fluid balance, intestinal function, and strengthening of the immune system. MLD is indicated for many pathologies such as long or post COVID, fibromyalgia, Crohn’s disease, allergies, Lyme disease, alopecia, neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, Alzheimer’s disease, acne, diabetes, scars (such as c-section) and can reduce the appearance of cellulite!

How often should one come in for Manual Lymph Drainage treatment?

Similar to massage, MLD benefits are best when received on a regular basis. There are many options to incorporate this modality into your wellness routine. One method is to “Jump start” your system with a restore package, which includes (2) 60 minute and (2)-105 minute sessions completed as close as possible within a 30 day time frame. Once those sessions are completed, maintaining an MLD session once every 4-6 weeks is optimal. You can also incorporate MLD into your 90 minute massage session with a combination of traditional massage followed by an MLD treatment. This is a great option for those on the fence. Whatever your decision may be, the MLD technique may change your view of bodywork.

There are a few conditions in which MLD is contraindicated such as major organ failure (heart, liver, kidney, etc.), DVT/blood clots (within the past 2 years), pregnancy-related morning sickness, and infections to name a few.

Before we dive in with the nitty gritty of SPF. Fun fact for you: July is UV Safety Month. During this time, the mission is to spread awareness about how important it is to protect our skin from the side effects of UV rays. We know that one of the best ways to practice UV safety is to wear sunscreen every day and not just during the sunny days of summer.

To acknowledge UV Safety Month and warm summer weather, I bet you are excited to spend time with family and friends, planning vacations, with one destination remaining a popular choice for many: the beach. However, extra time spent soaking up the sun increases our exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, it raises our risk for developing skin cancer and damage to our skin.

Sunscreen is one of the most important tools in the prevention of skin cancer/damage and keeping our skin healthy from environmental factors all year round.

While the skin is at its most vulnerable when on holiday in the sun, the risk of skin damage is a year-round concern. It’s really important to use sunscreen every day because ultraviolet rays are present all year round, even in the winter months. Ultraviolet rays can cause problems with skin cancer and skin aging. It’s really important to incorporate sunscreen use into your daily regime so it becomes routine.

Many people think that skin protection against UV rays is only necessary when you are in the sun and only during the summer months. However, the use of sunscreen in winter, autumn, or during rainy periods is essential since the skin is still exposed to UV rays. In fact, even if the sky is overcast, clouds allow between 80% and 95% of the sun’s rays to pass through. The application of sunscreen all year round is particularly recommended to protect against UV rays.

UV Safety: Types of UV Radiation

There are two types of UV radiation and their harmful rays. The first one is: Ultraviolet A (UVA) Rays. This is the most common cause of premature aging of the skin (i.e., wrinkles). The second one is: Ultraviolet B (UVB) Rays. This ray is the most dangerous, causing sunburns. Overexposure to both types of rays can cause skin damage. Sunscreens labeled as “broad spectrum” help protect against the effects of both UVA and UVB rays.

A sunscreen’s sun protection factor (SPF) indicates how much protection it offers against UV radiation. Sunscreens with an SPF of at least 30, will block 97 percent of the sun’s rays. An SPF that is higher than 30, starts to lose its effectiveness and chemical properties of protecting the skin from the UV rays.

Rule of thumb is to apply SPF every two hours when outside. When looking for an SPF ensure that the label does not say: Waterproof or Sweat-proof. The label should state: Water Resistant, which is effective for up to 40 minutes in water or Very Water Resistant, which is effective for up to 80 minutes in water.

These days, it seems to be common knowledge that sun exposure can lead to skin cancer, but the honest truth is that our brains have been programmed otherwise. For decades, we’ve bought into marketing campaigns that the position of SPF is a “warm-weather” essential.

Thankfully, there is a lot more conversation about sunscreen and advances in the types of sunscreen available. But what is still concerning, is that most of the dialogue is anchored in SPF being a summer “trend” ; the concept of wearing SPF all year around is fleeting. I think it’s important to caution us all against calling it a trend. By its very definition, a trend does not last. Our society names and cycles through trends quickly, so let’s be sure that we don’t let that happen to SPF.

We’ve come so far in the education and availability of better sunscreen options, so I urge you to continue to wear it daily — and keep protecting your skin, every single season. Rethinking your habits with new daily rituals takes work, but I can attest that preserving your skin and overall health can be just as easy as applying your favorite products. It wasn’t too long ago that we had to convince people to wear seatbelts in cars and helmets on bikes, so it’s my hope that applying SPF year-round will soon become the same.

By Andrea Popolizio

The biggest question I get asked as an esthetician: What is a chemical peel? In a nutshell: A chemical peel is a peel solution that works by removing the outer layers of the skin so that a new smooth layer of skin is revealed. Peels have a longer lasting effect for results, such as, texture improvement, tightening, a more even skin tone and an overall healthier appearance.

Chemical Peels Types:

There are different types of chemical peels from neutralizing to non-neutralizing and AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) to BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids). These peels work from the inside out and stimulate the production of fibroblasts which creates collagen to give an overall appearance of youthful, toned skin.

Alpha-hydroxy acids are glycolic and lactic. This acid dissolves desmosomes, the protein bridge that holds dead skin cells together. AHAs are stimulating and derived from fruit, sugar, sour milk and other natural food/plant-based sources. AHAs are a popular choice for acne scars, enlarged pores and skin imperfections; these can all be alleviated by using this type of acid. They remove dead skin cells and exfoliate the skin, allowing the healthy skin underneath to be exposed.

Beta-hydroxy acid is salicylic. Salicylic works by creating a shedding effect or exfoliation. BHAs are derived from the Willow Bark Tree. BHAs slightly differ in their molecule structure and rejuvenate the skin slightly differently as well. BHAs are known to help eliminate acne by penetrating thicker and deeper into the skin with no irritation. With an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect, the chemical peel will minimize the pores and clear out follicular debris. This highly effective pore minimizer is both a natural peeling agent and pore cleanser that clarifies problematic skin. Salicylic Acid removes aging skin cells and oils attached to the skin’s surface, improving acne prone skin.

There are different levels of acids known as non-neutralizing and neutralizing formulas. Most acids’ natural state is between 2.0 – 2.5 and our skin’s natural pH level is between 4.5 – 5.5. Most companies will neutralize their acids to raise the pH level to our skin’s natural pH, this renders the natural acid and can cause the acid to be less effective or not effective at all. When a peel solution has a neutralized formulation which consists of a base with sodium or ammonium hydroxide to reduce causticity and raise the pH.

Neutralizing skin peels remain on the skin and are not removed. Instead, your skin absorbs them and leads to the peeling. Self-neutralizing chemical peels are typically layered peels. This means during application, your esthetician will apply layers of the peel solution and other beneficial products. Usually, these peels are medium depth peels. Therefore, they are best suited for those with specific skin concerns or experienced facial peel clients. One of the major advantages of self-neutralizing chemical peels is that they are highly customizable. If during the procedure your skin begins feeling too painful or tight, they can modify the procedure to your skin. Additionally, they can exchange, skip, or add layers based on your specific skin needs.

Non-neutralizing skin peels are removed from the skin with cool water or cool compresses to soothe the skin. By soothing the skin with the cool water or compresses, this helps alleviate any redness or frosting to occur and restore the skin back to its natural pH balance. Ultimately, this process reduces the effects of the acid solution on the skin. This peel is considered a light peel and the non-neutralizing peels are great for clients who want to try out a chemical peel without getting the full side effect of frosting or peeling. This peel is not customizable as the procedure is one layer of the solution then neutralizing it with the cool water and remaining products.

Now that we have covered the different types of peels and acids. The significance of chemical peels are: improving skin texture/ tone and lessening the appearance of fine wrinkles. If you have a medium chemical peel, treated skin will be noticeably smoother. After a deep chemical peel, you’ll see a dramatic improvement in the look and feel of treated areas. The results are subtle but increase with repeated treatments. Results may vary and not be permanent due to new sun exposure or other environmental or hormonal factors. A series (4 to 6 skincare treatments every 2 to 4 weeks) is recommended for most clients to see optimal results.

I hope this article has given you a deeper look or clarified any questions you may have had regarding chemical peels.

Thank you for taking this journey to learn about chemical peels and their differences/side effects!

Happy Peeling!

Gua Sha

Across your social media platforms, you may have seen the “new” beauty trend where people are dragging stones across their faces promising a natural facelift and eternal beauty. The actual name for this practice is called Gua Sha (pronounced Gwah-Shah). This technique has been in practice for thousands of years with the earliest medical recordings dating back to the Chinese Ming Dynasty between the 1300s and 1600s. The Empress of the Chinese Ming Dynasty used to utilize a jade stone on her face to help keep her looking young. Other women were fascinated by the visual vitality and it quickly became adopted as a highly practiced beauty care regimen.

Gua Sha quite literally translates to “scraping” (Gua) and “sand” or “illness” (Sha). The thought behind the practice is that by scraping a stone across parts of your body, you will help promote increased blood and lymphatic flow. The concept is that stagnation of the blood can lead to pathogenic heat that can be linked with disease, when you move the blood or lymph fluid, you are essentially allowing disease and inflammation to flow through the body until it has been filtered and then expelled via the lymphatic system.

Lymphatic fluid is vital to our bodies to help rid it of toxins and clear disease. Other uses of Gua Sha include utilizing the stone as a tool to help release tension in tight muscles. This can be extremely beneficial for someone who might suffer from TMJ, a condition that most commonly comes from pain arising from extreme tightness in the masseter muscle as well as some of the smaller chewing muscles.

Gua Sha Benefits

There are an array of benefits to practicing Gua Sha, some of them include:

Skin renewal

Reduced inflammation and puffiness

Smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles

Enhances the penetration of skincare formulas (Hence GREAT to get along with your facial routine)

Helps to flush out toxins and excess fluids

Relieves side effects of conditions such as migraine headaches, neck pain and TMJ

Natural sculpting and contouring (known as the natural facelift)

It is safe for almost anyone to receive Gua Sha. As always, is important to go over the goals and any questions you may have in a session with a practitioner. Here at 640, we offer a standalone Gua Sha service that includes a relaxing neck and head massage as well as a Gua Sha add-on to any massage service.

“I am going to work a muscle through your armpit now” Is something you may have heard in a massage session while working on shoulder tension. Introducing: “Subscapularis, the key to the shoulder”. Subscapularis is one of the four Rotator Cuff muscles (the others being Supraspinatus, Infraspinatus, and Teres Minor, all on the posterior aka back side of the scapula/shoulder blade. Subscapularis is anterior aka front).

Let’s dive into what the rotator cuff does and why Subscapularis is so important to work.

Subscapularis: The Powerhouse of Your Shoulder

The Rotator Cuff collectively provides internal and external rotation of the shoulder, stabilization of the shoulder, counteraction of the deltoid while in abduction (lifting out) and flexion (lifting forward), deceleration of the arm when you throw something or swing a golf club. That’s a lot of work!

The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in our bodies which means it’s the least stable, so that means these muscles are working overtime to provide stabilization.

Back to Subscapularis. This muscle makes up the entire front of the scapula and attaches to the humerus (upper arm bone) which creates internal rotation. When this muscle is tight, it is in a constant state of contraction which means the other rotator cuff muscles are constantly overstretched. We see this in those who are in a forward bending motion daily for their jobs (think carpenters, mechanics, dental hygienists, gasp…massage therapists!), those who are at a desk or on their phone all day, athletes, and those who lift heavy daily; whether it be for work or fitness. In summation, most of us need a Subscapularis release.

So, why do we need this muscle deep in the trenches of the armpit addressed?

As mentioned earlier, Subscapularis covers the entire front of the scapula, it’s also a powerhouse of a muscle, generating 50% of the strength of the four rotator cuff muscles. Sure, you can feel relief without working it, by just working the more accessible muscles on the back, but inevitably those over-stretched muscles on the opposite side will continue to be overstretched since Subscapularis will remain in constant contraction. Thus, pain will return. Our bodies are in a constant dance of shortening and lengthening. When working in any area of the body, addressing what is constantly shortened will help the opposing muscles that are constantly stretched.

The four rotator cuff muscles are not the only ones that attach to the scapula. In fact, there are seventeen muscles that attach to it and not all of them are in the upper back!

Let’s remember, the only muscle found on the front of it is Subscapularis. In many cases, those sixteen other muscles will become overstretched if Subscapularis is not reset to it’s normal resting muscle tone. Pain in the low, mid, and upper back as well as neck can all benefit from releasing the subscapularis. Our anatomy is connected in such a beautiful way. We do not always realize how working in seemingly insignificant areas can really open us up elsewhere. Our muscles are constantly dancing with each other, and it is up to us to learn the appropriate choreography.
